Description

The Railway Enthusiasts' Club of Farnborough, Hampshire, organised The Severn Boar Rail Tour of the Forest of Dean starting from Gloucester Central Station and taking in Cinderford, Coleford and Lydney. This photograph comes from the second of two tours that were run as the first was over subscribed. The tours used two GWR 0-6-0 Pannier Tank engines, numbers 1658 and 1664.

The tunnel was originally built in 1809 as part of the horse-drawn tramway connecting the docks at Bullo Pill to the interior of the Forest of Dean. The tunnel was enlarged by Brunel in 1854 to accommodate broad gauge track, converted to standard gauge in 1872. The tunnel was closed to all traffic in 1967, the track removed and both portals bricked up.
