Description
This series consists of 1557 images of English locations, 104 Scottish and 78 Welsh, it also includes 2 photographs of Dublin’s Heuston Station. The photographs were taken between 1964 and 1999 except three, which may be copies of earlier images, dated 1937, 1958 and 1960. Most are colour 2½-inch square slides but 14 are Black & White and 7 are 35mm colour transparencies.
The series demonstrates Ian Parsons’ particular interest in railways ranging from images of preserved historic steam locomotives running on heritage railways or narrow-gauge tourist lines, through miniature replicas of Union Pacific engines at a theme park, to a 5-inch gauge model line in the garden of a neighbour.
The primary focus of the collection is railway architecture, it documents major and provincial stations across the country some in current use with others derelict or having been repurposed. Images consist of primarily exterior and platform views but include interior views of larger stations. it covers ancillary buildings such as goods sheds, footbridges and signal boxes and extends to railway hotels and workers accommodation such as Stockton and Darlington cottages and Swindon’s Railway Village. There are some scenic landscape views with bridges and viaducts including a set of a journey on the West Highland Railway with views of Ben Nevis.
The collection has a secondary focus on canals, docks and water transport, including a set of aerial photos showing Sharpness Docks, and general industrial heritage with images of mills pumping stations and warehouses, quarrying and mining landscapes.
Other images cover a range of buildings including museums, churches, universities, town halls, stately homes and country houses particularly of the late Victorian and early 20th century Arts and Crafts style by architects like Lutyens, Voysey and Rennie Mackintosh.
