Description

The gardens at Hidcote Manor were created by Major Lawrence Johnston between 1907 and 1948, when the gardens were acquired by the National Trust. The gardens are described as being in the Arts and Crafts style, and form a series of named 'rooms'. The Stilt Garden was part of the second stage of the garden, which was developed by Johnston between 1914 and 1920. At the west end of the Stilt Garden is the wrought-iron gate and overthrow shown in this photograph. The garden contains a gravel path leading to a strip of grass between two rows of hornbeam 'stilts' which form dense hedges. To the east is the Red Borders, which were part of the first stage of development, between 1907 and 1914.
