Description

The wetland wildlife reserve at Slimbridge was opened in 1946. In the mid-20th century the world population of the nene, or Hawaiian goose, had fallen to 30 and the species was close to extinction. Birds were brought to Slimbridge and bred; the first Slimbridge-reared nene was released into the wild in 1962. The population in the early 21st century had increased to 2,000.
