Historic England Publishes Joint Letter Calling for Birmingham’s Priceless Heritage to be Protected Amidst Financial Reconstruction
Historic England has today (28th September) released a joint letter written with Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to Birmingham City Council CEO Deborah Cadman and incoming commissioners, including lead commissioner Max Caller.
The letter calls for Birmingham’s heritage and culture to be “protected and prioritised” in discussions about the future of the local authority amidst the recent issuing of a section 114 notice.
“As the process of balancing the council’s books begins, local communities are rightly concerned about the fate of publicly owned historic places and buildings and arts and culture venues,” the letter states. “Birmingham’s financial reconstruction must not come at the cost of its priceless heritage.”
