Number 1: Why is a Diverse and Inclusive Workplace Essential for the Heritage Sector?
The demographics of the UK are changing rapidly, by immigration, emigration, changing global norms, ageing populations and generational differences, coupled with varying birth rates. Successful organisations understand how demographics can affect their markets, client base, customers and how to effectively leverage diversity to create value by attracting and retaining the best talent.
Historic England exists to identify, protect and preserve England’s historic environment for future generations. As the demographics of society are changing, as above, so too are the expectations of what is of historical importance. To be able to better understand these expectations, we need to ensure we employ people who are not only experts in their fields but also have an understanding of what the historic environment means to the diverse communities that make up our country.
A diverse workforce that reflects the local and national demographics of society is therefore essential not only for Historic England so that it can continue to be relevant to all sections of society and future generations but also the wider heritage sector.
What are the challenges and also opportunities for the heritage sector to embracing diversity and creating inclusive places to work? To start this debate, we have asked a number of prominent people to write their thoughts. We do hope that you will contribute to this debate not only on the articles below, but also with your thoughts on how we can progress this agenda within the heritage sector. Please send your responses to Rosie Sherrington, Senior Policy Adviser - Diversity and Inclusion and share articles on social media via the tab on the left.
