Number 11: Archaeology and Planning
The recent government white paper ‘Planning for the Future’ proposes radical changes to the current system of land use planning in England. Recent research for the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists – the Archaeology and Planning Case Studies project – demonstrates how important current planning polices are for the protection of archaeological sites, especially the great majority which have no legal protection as scheduled monuments.
It is now 30 years since the introduction of the first substantive planning policies designed to manage the impact of development on heritage assets with archaeological interest. This edition of Heritage Online Debate brings together some results from the case studies project and the reflections of practitioners in the sector on how current planning policy has developed – and where it might be going next.
