Workshop at Royal Earlswood Hospital, Redhill, Surrey
This building is dated 1861. It was built as a laundry, boot room and boiler shop at what was the 'Earlswood Asylum for Idiots and Imbeciles'. Part of the ethos of the treatment of the mentally handicapped was that the institution should try to be self-supporting. The able bodied were encouraged to learn a trade. This is the earliest workshop building for mentally handicapped people known in the country.
