Workmen from John Laing plc sitting on a stone wall in Eden, Cumbria

These workmen were building part of the M6 Motorway between Killington and Tebay, in Cumbria. John Laing plc started building this part of the motorway in October 1967, and it was opened to traffic in October 1970. It was a complicated section to build because of the landscape and the topography. These workmen all did different jobs, including driving vans and bulldozers, being in charge or part of a 'gang' of workers, and operating heavy machinery - known as 'plant'.
