Woburn Abbey, Woburn, Bedfordshire
The east front of Woburn Abbey before the alterations made in the mid 20th century. The house was originally built in 1547. It was on the site of Woburn Abbey and used the remains of its buildings. The abbey was a Cistercian house founded in 1145. It was closed in 1538 during the dissolution of the monasteries. The house was largely rebuilt in 1630 by the 4th Duke of Bedford. It was severely altered in 1747-61 by Henry Flitcroft and in 1787-90 by Henry Holland. It was built around a courtyard in a square plan but the East wing and parts of the North and South wings were demolished in 1949-50.
