William Smith Memorial, Churchill, Oxfordshire

This monument has the inscription "In memory of William Smith, the Father of British Geology. Born at Churchill March 23, 1769. Died at Northampton August 28, 1839. Erected by the Earl of Ducie 1891". Smith had always shown an interest in geology from a young age. He worked for a surveyor, where he began to learn more about it. In 1801 he drew a rough sketch of what would become "The Map that Changed the World". It was a sketch of the geology of Britain. He is credited with creating the first geological map of England and Wales with part of Scotland - this was published in 1815.
