Waring and Gillow factory, White City, Greater London

A large crowd of workers, the majority of them women, leaving the premises of Waring and Gillow in White City. Waring and Gillow made furniture and had factories in London and Lancaster. Some were converted for use as a munitions factory during the Great War. This particular factory premises manufactured tents for the military. A large number of huge sheets, of what looks like woollen material, are draped over frames on the left hand side of the photograph. Note that one lady is holding a baby. Maybe nurseries were provided to allow mothers to work.
