Interior view of Wandsworth Prioson showing a prison cell. The prison opened in 1851. It originally had individual cells for 700 inmates, each with a private toilet, but after 1870 the toilets were removed to make way for more prisoners.

Themes

The village stocks with four ankle holes for the punishment of petty crime and misdemeanor in the village. Although probably used from the Anglo-Saxon period, a statute of 1351 made it law for every township to provide and maintain a set of stocks.
