Waltham (Eleanor) Cross, High Street, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire

This is one of only 3 surviving Eleanor Crosses. It was made in 1291 by the sculptor Alexander of Abingdon and the masons Nicholas Dyminge de Reyne and Roger Crundale. It is in memory of Eleanor of Castile, wife of Edward I. Queen Eleanor died on the 28th November 1290 at Harby in Nottinghamshire. Her funeral procession passed from Lincoln to Westminster in December 1290. 12 crosses were put up marking the places where her body lay overnight. The second and third stages of this cross were rebuilt in 1832-3 by W B Clarke, in 1885-92 by C E Ponting, and again in 1950-3.
