Union Workhouse, Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire

This workhouse was built in 1850. After 1834 people were only offered support if they entered the workhouse. Known as the 'Test' this was supposed to stop people asking for relief unless they really needed it.

During Tudor and Stuart times almshouses were generally built and maintained by Craft Guilds or wealthy individuals
The almhouse was founded in 1437 by the Earl and Countess of Suffolk to house 13 poor men under the care of two chaplains.
