Tinside Lido, Hoe Road, Plymouth

This sea water bathing pool was built in 1935. It was designed by J Wibberley, the borough engineer, in an art deco style. It is built in concrete and has a semi-circular pool, 180 feet in diameter. The entrance buildings were designed for sunbathing and have flat roofs and metal windows. The pool has three fountains which aerate the water. Many seaside towns had lidos built in the 1930s when sport and fitness were very popular. Many of them became run down and some have been demolished. Tinside lido has been fully restored since the photograph was taken.
