The Town Hall and remains of Mediaeval Maison Dieu, High Street, Dover, Kent
This site has been used as a Mediaeval hospital, chapel, prison, town hall and assembly rooms. The Maison Dieu (almshouse) was founded by Hubert de Burgh around 1203. It looked after pilgrims, the poor and the sick. The Maison Dieu hall still stands and was restored from 1849 onwards. The hospital stood on the site of the present Town Hall which was built in 1881.
