The Royal Citadel, Plymouth

The fort was thought to have been built between 1592-1598 in response to the threat of attack by sea from the Spanish. The Armada was defeated in 1588. Fears that Spain would attempt to invade England again led to the strengthening of defences. This site is now in the care of English Herigage (2010).
