The Pillar of Salt Road Sign, Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

This was known as the 'Pillar of Salt'. It was constructed in 1935 by Basil Oliver in International Modern style. The sign forms the central point of a very important group of listed buildings and stands close to the former Abbey gatehouse. Bury St Edmunds Town Council went to great lengths to find something worthy of this important location when the growth in motor traffic made a signpost essential. This signpost is unique.
