The Old College, Petersfield, Hampshire

This building has the inscription "Churcher's College 1729". It was built as a result of the will of a Richard Churcher. He was a local philanthropist who had made his money from working for the East India Company. In 1722 his will left money 'to educate 10 or 12 local boys from Petersfield, of any age from 9 to 14, in the arts of writing, arithmetic, mathematics and navigation so they could be apprenticed to masters of ships sailing in the East Indies'.
