The Museum, Scarborough, North Yorkshire
The Rotunda Museum was built between 1828 and 1829. The lower buildings were added in 1860. The shape was suggested to the Scarborough Philosophical Society by William Smith, 'the father of English Geology'. He believed that a circular space best showed off the exhibits. The architect was R. H. Sharp. The Rotunda is one of the oldest purpose built museums in Britain still fulfilling its original role. As such it is an important part of Britain's scientific heritage.
