The Iron House, Hopton Wafers, Shropshire
This house was built in the early 1800s. It was probably originally used as a weighing office for iron ore. The most important feature of the house is the remarkable iron roof built by Thomas Botfield. He came from a family of Shropshire ironmasters. He bought the manor of Hopton Wafers and registered a patent (No.3264) for `Iron Roofs for Houses' on 26 July 1809. The roof of this house is probably a prototype of this patent.
