The Cross, Market Cross, Malmesbury, Wiltshire
A group of men standing beside the Market Cross in Malmesbury, with the bell tower of St Paul's Church in the background. The Cross was built in the late 15th/early 16th century, renovated c1800 by the Earl of Suffolk, and repaired in 1909-12 and 1949-50. A record from c1544 states that it was built in living memory "for poore market folkes to stande dry when rayne cummith". It is an excellent example of a market cross from this period.
