The Breakwater and Lighthouse, The Sound, Plymouth
Building of the breakwater was begun in 1811. It was by Sir John Rennie, engineer, with William Knight as the resident architect. It was completed in 1841 with a lighthouse at one end. It was built of stone to a rectangular plan and the ends are splayed in towards the Sound. It is over 5,000 feet long and is said to have needed 4 1/2 million tons of stone.
