The Arkwright Houses, Cromford, Derbyshire

This row of eleven houses was built in 1776-7 by Richard Arkwright to house his textile workers. They are the first of the workers' houses erected by Arkwright. They provided accommodation for the workers at his new Cromford Mill. They are important because they also provided workshop space on the second floor to allow home working. Cromford was built by Arkwright as a model settlement. It had a church, chapels, school, shops and public houses. The houses now belong to the Landmark Trust.
