Temple of Mithras along Hadrian's Wall, nr Simonburn, Northumberland
The Temple of Mithras (also referred to as the Mithraeum) is near Carrawburgh fort along Hadrian's Wall. An excavation at the site in 1950 revealed three building phases. The first was in around 200AD. The second phase started around 222AD and lasted until it was destroyed in 297AD. Then it was totally reconstructed in c300AD, and survived until around 330AD when it was desecrated, probably by Christians. Mithras was a Sun God often worshiped by the Roman military (soldiers). This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
