Swan Lane Mills, Higher Swan Lane, Bolton, Greater Manchester

These buildings formed a complex of three cotton spinning mills. No. 1 was built in 1901, No. 2 in 1905 and No. 3 in 1914. They were all built to the designs of Stott & Sons of Manchester. The expansion of the Lancashire cotton industry in the early 20th century was marked by the construction of very large spinning mills thorough the Greater Manchester area, normally containing over 100,000 spindles. Swan Lane No. 1 and No. 2 Mills were completed in two phases as a 210,000 spindle double mill with a shared power system. It was claimed to be the largest spinning mill in the world under a single roof. When No.3 was completed this added a further 120,000 spindles to the site.
