St Michaels Hospital, Braintree, Essex
The hospital was originally the Braintree Union Workhouse. It was designed by William Nash and built between 1837 and 1838. It was based on Sampson Kempthorne's 'hexagonal' plan, but included a detatched infirmary from the outset. In the mid-19th Century a new infirmary and dining room were built. In 1890 new entrance buildings, including a board room, and new infirmary buildings were added to the designs of Frank Whitmore. A nurses' home was built in the 1930s and casual huts in 1948. It is now part of St Michael's Hospital.
