Sledmere House, Sledmere, East Riding of Yorkshire

This large country house was constructed circa 1780-90. It was designed by Samuel Wyatt and Sir Christopher Sykes, 2nd Baronet Sledmere, in a Classical style. It was built around the core of a house built for Sir Mark Sykes, 1st Baronet, in 1751. The landscaping of the grounds led to the demolition and rebuilding of the whole village of Sledmere and the diversion of the York to Bridlington road. A restoration was carried out in 1911 following a fire. The Sykes family were a merchant family from Leeds in the 16th and 17th centuries. They became the largest landowners in the area in the 19th century.
