Sir Alfred Lewis Monument, Pier Head, Liverpool, Merseyside
The Pier Head is a focal point. This has led to many statues being sited here. This monument is to Sir Alfred Lewis Jones. It was designed by George Frampton and put up in 1913. Sir Alfred was a shipowner and founder of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. There is only a small bust of him. The rest of the monument has figures representing the fruits of industry, research and enterprise. The standing crowned female figure on top wears medieval dress and holds a ship in her hands, symbolising Liverpool.
