Scaleby Castle, Scaleby, Cumbria

The castle dates from the late 13th century. The licence to crenellate was granted to Sir Robert de Tylliol in 1307. It was mostly rebuilt in the 15th century and has a late 16th century section built for Sir Edward Musgrave. It was remodelled in about 1838. The oldest parts are built from red sandstone taken from the nearby Roman Wall. It is the birthplace of the Rev William Gilpin (artist) and his brother Sawrey Gilpin.
