Rose Castle, Dalston, Cumbria
Rose Castle is the residence of the Bishop of Carlisle. It was built around the 13th century on the site of an earlier castle. The licences needed to crenellate were granted by the King in 1336 and 1355. Strickland Tower was built in 1400-1419. Towers were added by Bishop Bell in 1488 and Bishop Kite in 1522-4. It was partly destroyed during the Civil War and repaired by William Heveningham as a private house in 1653-5. Later bishops continued to alter and add to the castle up to 1955.
