Robin Hoods Ball, Stonehenge, Wiltshire
A Neolithic causewayed enclosure showing as an earthwork although a lot of the bank has been ploughed over and obscured. It has two circuits of bank and ditch with many causeways over the ditches. It encloses a maximum area of around 3 hectares. The site may have been industrial. A large number of worked flints have been found nearby. There is no connection with Robin Hood. It appears that the name was given to a small circular copse of wood near the earthworks. Over time the name probably came to be associated with the enclosure instead.
