Rievaulx Abbey, Rievaulx, Ryedale, North Yorkshire

Rievaulx Abbey, a Cistercian monastery, was founded in 1132. This reconstruction drawing shows Cistercian monks working in the Infirmary Cloister at Rievaulx Abbey, as it may have appeared in the mid-thirteenth century. Medicinal herbs for the treatment of the sick were grown in the cloister garden. It was once one of the foremost Cistercian monasteries in Britain. After the dissolution the site was granted to the Earl of Rutland along with the Helmsley estates.This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
