Remains of Castle, Castle Dyke, Stamford, Lincolnshire
These 14th century arches are all that remain of Stamford Castle. They were probably part of an outbuilding associated with the castle. The castle was built in c1075, shortly after the Norman Conquest. It was a motte and bailey castle. It had fallen into disuse by 1340 and was demolished in the reign of Richard III (1483-85). The site of the castle has now been built on.
