Raw Farm Bastlehouse, Hepple, Northumberland
This building was built in the 16th or early 17th century. It is what is known as a bastle house. This type of house was fortified. They were two or three storeys high. The lower floor was always used to house animals and the upper floor(s) were for living in. The entrance is on the first floor. This particular house is also said to be the scene of the murder, in 1791, of Margaret Crozier by William Winter. He was executed at Winters Gibbet in Elsdon Parish.
