Priory of St Milburga, Much Wenlock, Shropshire

This priory was originally a Saxon Nunnery founded in c680. It was founded by Merewald of Mercia for his daughter Saint Milburge(Mildburg). She was Abbess until her death in c722. It was destroyed by the Danes in c874. It was then refounded by Leofric of Mercia in c1050 as a Minster church, dedicated to Saint Milburge. It was finally established as a Cluniac Priory in c1080. It was dependent on La Charité-sur-Loire church in France, until 1395. The monks then had English citizenship until the priory was dissolved in 1540. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010). Find out more.
