Prince of Orange Monument, Lower Brixham, Torbay
The Prince of Orange Monument was built in 1823 and has the inscription: ON THIS STONE AND NEAR THIS SPOT WILLIAM PRINCE OF ORANGE FIRST SET FOOT ON HIS LANDING IN ENGLAND FIFTH NOVEMBER 1688. In 1688 English Protestants had asked him to invade England to dislodge his father-in-law James II. He landed on the 5th November and James fled. Parliament offered William and his wife Mary joint monarchy in February 1689.
