Prehistoric Rock Art, Doddington, Northumberland

This carved stone dates back to prehistoric times. In Britain, the term ‘rock art’ is sometimes used loosely to refer to all prehistoric carvings on rock. This stone carving probably dates from the late Stone Age or early Bronze Age (approximately 3800BC to 1500BC). This is because of the type of carving on it. It has ‘cup' marks (shallow bowl shaped depressions a few centimetres across) and ‘cup-and-ring’ marks (a cup mark surrounded by one or more concentric circular grooves).
