Plymouth Wharf, Plymouth

This photograph shows a diver preparing to enter the water to fix concrete cylinders off Plymouth Wharf. The concrete cylinders were part of a new wharf that was being built to replace the old wooden one, so that coal could be delivered to the newly built Plymouth 'B' Power Station. The wharf was located on the Cattewater, at the mouth of the River Plym. The image illustrates the working conditions and the physical challenges faced by divers who work in a range of industries. The photograph is taken from the John Laing Collection.
