Piccadilly Circus, Westminster, Greater London
Looking north-eastwards from Piccadilly Circus along the line of Shaftesbury Avenue. Shaftesbury Avenue cut through a slum area and opened in 1886. It was named after the great social reformer, Lord Shaftesbury. The advertisement on the motorbus announces that The Pink Lady can be seen at the Globe (now Gielgud) Theatre, dating the photograph to 1912. The vehicles are mainly motor cars and a motor bus but there is also a horse drawn cart. This shows that the old form of 'horse power' continued in use for some time after the invention of the petrol engine.
