Old & New Locks, Naburn, York
The Old Lock and adjacent dam were built in 1757 at a cost of £10,000. The New Lock, offices and workshops were built in 1887-89 at a cost of £14,098. The old lock was built because the River Ouse had started to silt up and larger ships could no longer get to York. This was affecting its importance as a trade route. The opening of the new lock spurred on a new phase of ship building in York.
