Nottingham Castle Gatehouse, Nottingham

This gatehouse was built in 1252-1255, for Henry III. It is part of a Medieval motte and bailey castle. It was begun in 1068 by William I. By the time this gatehouse was built it had become one of the four principal English castles, and the main castle in the North Midlands. It was both a military stronghold and a royal palace. Extensive restoration was carried out from 1560-70. However it fell into disrepair during the reign of James 1 (1603-25). In 1651 all the fortifications were demolished except the gatehouse and the base of a tower. The site was cleared in 1674. A mansion was built on the site and is now used as a museum and art gallery.
