Muker Literary Institute, Muker, North Yorkshire
This building was originally a Literary Institute. It was built in 1867. The Victorian era saw the building of many institutes. They were built to give working class people access to some kind of education. State education was not made compulsory until 1870. Before then many people had no schooling, or only went long enough to get a very basic education. Children had been sent to work from a young age. This institute was probably built by/for the local mining community.
