Mowbray Grange, Bedale, North Yorkshire

This building was originally the Bedale Union Workhouse. It was built in 1839. The architects were John and William Atkinson. It was built to a corridor plan, to accommodate 100 inmates. In 1895 it was the scene of the murder of one of the helpers. Margaret Appleton was killed by George Dixon in a row over potatoes. It was reported in the local newspaper. In the 20th Century it was called Mowbray Grange Sanatorium and used for tuberculosis patients. It was later known as Mowbray Grange Hospital. In the late 20th Century the building was converted to private residences.
