Manchester United Football Club, Old Trafford, Greater Manchester
Manchester United was first formed as Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway) in 1878. Despite some success on the pitch, the club suffered financial troubles early in its history, and by the start of the 20th century was nearly bankrupt. A change of name in 1902 and investment from a local brewery owner saw a turnaround in the club's fortunes. The Old Trafford site was bought and on the 19th February 1910, Manchester United lost its inaugural game at Old Trafford 4-3 to Liverpool.
