Lowther Village, Lowther, Cumbria

These 12 houses were built in 1766-73 by Robert Adam. They were estate houses for Sir James Lowther and were part of a model village which was never completed. The village of Lowther was home to the Lowther family from 1283. Sir James Lowther was the son of Sir John Lowther who built Whitehaven and its port. Wealthy families often built planned estate villages for their workers.
