London and North Western Hotel, Liverpool, Merseyside
A view looking north along Lime Street from St George's Place with the North Western Hotel in the foreground. It dates from 1871-1896 and was designed by Alfred Waterhouse for the London North Western Railway in a French Renaissance style. Lime Street station is behind and to the right of the hotel. The Wellington Column can be seen in the background. It was put up in 1861-3 and stands in front of the Walker Art Galery on a triangular site formerly occupied by the old Islington Market. The monument is a 40 metre high column with a bronze statue of the Duke on top. On the pedestal are bronze plaques displaying the names of Wellington's victories.
