Limkilns, Crosby Garrett, Cumbria
These limekilns are on the west side of a track south west of Smardalegill Viaduct. They date from around 1860. They were built for work on building the Smardalegill Viaduct. They are built into the side of a hill so that the limestone and fuel can be easily transported to the top of the kilns. The lime was taken out from the bottom. Lime was used in industrial products such as cement and in whitewash.
