Lime Street Station and North Western Hotel, Liverpool, Merseyside

A view across Lime Street towards the North Western Hotel and Lime Street railway station. The hotel dates from 1871-1896 and was designed by Alfred Waterhouse for the London North Western Railway. The entrance to Lime Street Station can be seen to the right of the hotel. The station was built in 1867 to the designs of Francis Stevenson and William Baker. It replaced a station of 1836 built on the same site. In 1832 a tunnel was constructed between Edge Hill and the first station. Trains had to stop at Edge Hill because of the steep incline between Lime Street and Edge Hill. Their locomotives were removed and the passenger carriages were rolled down by gravity, their descent controlled by brakemen. The return journey was made by using a stationary engine to haul the carriages up with rope.
